AFCON 2025: Heartbreak, History, and the Battle for Bronze

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has reached its fever pitch. While the final showdown between the hosts and the defending champions looms, today is all about the "Battle of the Titans" as two of the continent's most decorated teams fight for the podium.

🥉 The Third-Place Playoff: Egypt vs. Nigeria

Date: Saturday, January 17, 2026

Venue: Stade Mohammed V, Casablanca

Both the Pharaohs and the Super Eagles entered this tournament as heavy favorites, but their dreams of gold were dashed in two of the most dramatic semi-finals in recent history.

• Egypt’s Road to Casablanca: Under coach Hossam Hassan, Egypt showed flashes of brilliance, surviving a 3-2 thriller against Côte d'Ivoire in the quarters. However, a 78th-minute strike from Sadio Mané saw them fall 1-0 to Senegal in the semi-finals.

• Nigeria’s Penalty Heartbreak: Nigeria stood toe-to-toe with hosts Morocco for 120 minutes in a goalless battle. Unfortunately, they fell 4-2 on penalties in a night that will be remembered as much for the intensity as for the refereeing controversy.

• The Stakes: Nigeria is aiming for a record ninth bronze medal. A win today would also draw them level with Egypt for the most AFCON wins in history (64).

Team News: Nigeria welcomes back captain Wilfred Ndidi from suspension, though they will miss Calvin Bassey (suspended). Egypt is struggling with a depleted defense, missing Hossam Abdel-Maguid (suspension) and Mohamed Hamdy (injury).

🇬🇭 The "Ghanaian Connection": Daniel Laryea Under Fire

While the Black Stars exited the tournament early, a Ghanaian remains at the center of the headlines. Referee Daniel Nii Laryea is currently trending across Africa following his officiating of the Nigeria vs. Morocco semi-final.

• The Controversy: Nigerian fans and players, including Bright Osayi-Samuel, have labeled his performance "appalling," accusing him of favoring the host nation.

• The Fallout: The backlash was so intense that Laryea reportedly deactivated his Instagram account. However, he recently told Sporty TV that he remains "unfazed," simply stating, "It’s football."

• Regional Rivalry: The controversy has reignited the "Jollof Wars," with Nigerian stars like Odumodublvck and Teni taking to social media to humorously (and heatedly) blame Ghana for the Super Eagles' exit.

🏆 The Grand Finale: Senegal vs. Morocco

Date: Sunday, January 18, 2026

Venue: Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat

The stage is set for a historic final tomorrow. It is a clash of cultures and styles: the defensive discipline of the Teranga Lions versus the flair and "home roar" of the Atlas Lions.

• Senegal: Looking to cement their status as the dominant force of the decade by winning their second title in three editions.

• Morocco: Chasing their first AFCON title since 1976. With Brahim Díaz scoring in almost every match, the hosts are confident they can end their 50-year wait on home soil.

📊 AFCON 2025 by the Numbers

This edition has officially become the highest-scoring AFCON in history:

• 120 Goals: Surpassing the 119 goals scored in 2023.

• 15th Host: Morocco is the 15th host nation to reach the final; the last three hosts to do so all went on to win
