GCMA NADMO Director MR HAKEEM ASAMOAH Tours Flood-Prone Areas and Major Drains in Need of Desilting
Date: June 5, 2025
In a proactive move to curb the annual threat of flooding ahead of the rainy season, the newly appointed Ga Central Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mr. Hakeem Asamoah , has embarked on a comprehensive tour of flood-prone communities and key drainage sites across the municipality.
The tour, which began early Thursday morning, saw Mr. Asamoah accompanied by some Assembly members and officials from the Municipal and Zonal NADMO offices. The team visited areas that have been historically vulnerable to flooding due to blocked drains, poor waste management, and inadequate infrastructure.
Speaking to the Headmistress and Owner of Jadel school which is part of the affected area during a stop at the heavily silted drain, Mr. Asamoah emphasized the urgency of the situation.
“We cannot continue to wait until lives are lost and property is destroyed. Our priority is to identify these critical points, clear the drains, and put in place long-term solutions to reduce the impact of flooding,” he said.
Residents in areas such as Anyaa Market, Fanmilk, Olebu Melcom and Ablekuma curve area expressed appreciation for the visit but called for swift action. Many recounted past floods that displaced families and disrupted businesses, urging the authorities to move beyond inspection to actual remediation.
According to Mr. Asamoah, he stated this is a familiarization tour to understand the situation but will embark on another one with the Ga central Municipal Engineer and relevant stakeholders to give this challenge a lasting solution. He also called on residents to support the process by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains.
“Disaster prevention is a shared responsibility. We must work together as a community to keep our environment clean and safe,” he added.
According to sources the Municipal Assembly has pledged to provide logistical support for the desilting exercise and is coordinating with NADMO to ensure that emergency preparedness plans are updated and ready for activation.
The tour is expected to continue this week, with Mr. Asante set to engage with community leaders, local engineers, and sanitation officers to build a coordinated response plan.
As climate change continues to intensify weather patterns, the proactive approach taken by the new GCMA NADMO Director is a timely step toward building a more resilient municipality.
