Ga Central Municipality Undertakes Major Clean-Up and Desilting Exercise at Ablekuma

GA CENTRAL MUNICIPALITY UNDERTAKES MAJOR CLEAN-UP AND DESILTING EXERCISE AT ABLEKUMA CURVE.

From 12th to 15th December 2025, the Ga Central Municipal Assembly, through the Anyaa Zonal Council, successfully carried out a large-scale clean-up and desilting exercise aimed at improving drainage, sanitation, and flood resilience within the municipality.

The exercise was coordinated by the Anyaa Zonal Council Secretary, Ms Abigail Abbey, with critical technical assistance and supervision provided by NADMO – Anyaa Zonal Office. The initiative was implemented in partnership with K-Tech Wellness Foundation and supported by contracted workers, all working collaboratively to address a long-standing environmental and drainage challenge in the area.

Target Area and Scope of Work

The clean-up and desilting focused on the heavily choked drain stretching from the Ablekuma Curve, through the Ga Rural Bank area, and extending towards the MTN Office. Over time, this drain had become excessively blocked with silt, stone chippings, and refuse, significantly reducing its capacity to convey stormwater and increasing the risk of flooding ( extending to the road), especially during heavy rains.

Activities undertaken during the four-day exercise included:

Removal of accumulated silt and debris

Clearing of stone chippings and solid waste from the drain channel

General environmental clean-up of the surrounding area

Proper disposal of collected waste to approved sites

Enhancing Flood Prevention and Public Safety

The involvement of NADMO Anyaa Zonal Office ensured that the exercise met disaster risk reduction standards, with a strong focus on preventing flooding and protecting lives and property. By restoring the drainage system to its functional state, the municipality has taken a proactive step toward reducing flood-related emergencies within the catchment area.

Partnership for Community Development

The collaboration with K-Tech Wellness Foundation highlights the importance of public–private and civil society partnerships in addressing environmental and sanitation challenges. Their participation, together with the dedication of the contracted workers, contributed significantly to the successful execution of the project.

A Call for Community Responsibility

The Ga Central Municipal Assembly uses this opportunity to commend all stakeholders involved and to encourage residents and businesses along the drainage corridor to avoid dumping refuse into drains. Sustaining the benefits of this exercise requires collective responsibility and continuous community engagement.

This clean-up and desilting initiative reaffirms the Assembly’s commitment to environmental sanitation, flood resilience, and sustainable urban management, ensuring a cleaner and safer Ablekuma for all.
