ADDRESSING FLOODING CHALLENGES AT BOKORBOKOR

🌧️ Community Meeting at Bokorbokor Osofo Maame Area: Addressing Flooding Challenges

Date: 18th October 2025
Venue: Bokorbokor Osofo Maame Emilia’s Church
Opening Time: 5:00 PM
Closing Time: 6:11 PM

On the evening of 18th October 2025, residents of Bokorbokor Osofo Maame gathered for a vital community meeting to discuss the recent flooding incidents that have affected several homes following heavy rains. The floods, which have led to the breaking of walls and damage to properties, have become a growing concern for residents.

The meeting opened with a prayer led by Osofo Maame Emilia, after which participants warmly welcomed the team from NADMO (National Disaster Management Organization). The NADMO representatives included Mr. Samuel Aidoo (Anyaa Zonal Council Director), Mr. Samuel Avisey (Anyaa Zonal Council, Head of Operations), Mr. Bernard Edah (Deputy Director Technicalities, Ga central municipality ) and finally Mr Hakeem Asamoah ( Director, Ga Central Municipality).

🔹 Identifying the Causes

Community members were encouraged to share their views on the causes and possible solutions to the flooding problem.

Mr. Francis Ampofo outlined three major contributing factors:
1.The Ablekuma Abease main drain often becomes silted. This reduces the volume of water it accommodates thereby directing water into their area.
2.A storey building within the community has disrupted the natural course of the drainage system.
3.Continuous desilting and sand winning along the main drain’s borders worsen the situation, allowing water to overflow into nearby homes.

Supporting his view, Mr. Kweku emphasized the urgent need for dredging the main drain to restore proper water flow.

Mr. Nuru Iddrisu also pointed out that the minor drain/gutter near the Deeper Life Church is too narrow and small to handle the volume of rainwater during heavy downpours, leading to frequent overflow and flooding.

Representing her landlord, Madam Janet added that the absence of a proper drainage network is another key reason for the recurring floods.

Mr. Samuel, a resident , echoed these concerns, attributing the flooding to residents blocking natural waterways with unauthorized structures. He urged that the drainage system be properly designed and constructed to prevent future disasters.

🔹 Calls for Unity and Action

Madam Berlinda voiced her full support for NADMO’s intervention, stating that she would stand by any decision made in the interest of the community—even if it affects her personally.

Osofo Maame Emilia recalled that the community previously had smaller water channels dug by the community feeding into the main drain, but during dredging operations, the operator sealed them off and redirected the flow. Later, a new resident blocked the alternative waterway, worsening the situation.

Mr. Samuel Aidoo confirmed that the problematic structure had already been marked for removal, noting that the issue had been reported to NADMO Director Mr. Hakeem Asamoah, who acknowledged it was long overdue.

🔹 NADMO’s Response

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Aidoo urged residents to cooperate with NADMO and refrain from blocking waterways, even if it requires sacrificing portions of their property for the public good.

Mr. Bernard Edah further highlighted that improper rainwater management, such as the lack of gutters and rain water harvesting systems (which was causing problem to a neighbour), was also contributing to the challenge..

When Mr. Hakeem Asamoah took the floor, he asked how many residents had obtained building permits. Only Madam Berlinda responded affirmatively. Mr. Asamoah used this as an opportunity to educate the community on the importance of acquiring proper permits before construction. He warned that unplanned developments often lead to devastating floods, resulting in loss of property and even lives.

Mr. Asamoah assured residents that dredging of the main drain would commence in the coming week. He concluded by encouraging the community to remain patient and work hand in hand with NADMO to achieve lasting solutions.

🔹 Closing Remarks

The meeting ended with a closing prayer by Mr. Samuel, a resident, at 6:11 PM, marking a hopeful step toward collaborative action against flooding in Bokorbokor Osofo Maame area.
